What does a knock sensor do?
A knock sensor monitors the engine for abnormal vibrations or “knocking” caused by detonation—when fuel in the cylinder ignites unevenly or too early. Its job is to detect these harmful vibrations and send signals to the engine control unit (ECU), which adjusts ignition timing to prevent damage. When the knock sensor isn’t working, the ECU can’t properly manage the timing, leading to potential issues like reduced performance, poor fuel economy, or even long-term engine damage if knocking persists. Replacing a faulty knock sensor is essential for maintaining smooth and efficient engine operation.
